The Best Free Software for Webmasters

Designing and maintaining websites can be expensive with all of the software required – photo editing software, graphics software and HTML editors. Below are a few programs you can download for free that will help you get your website up and running. (If it isn’t already!)

CoffeeCup HTML Editor (PC)
This is a nice HTML editor that color codes your code for you, making it easier to see what you’re doing. It also includes a “design” editor, making it easier for non-programmers to edit a webpage.

Smultron HTML Editor (Mac)
The software has syntax highlighting features which include over 90 different languages. You can also create new documents stored in your iCloud account to retrieve from any computer. This is easy to grab right off the Mac App Store and it’s great for developers.

Cyberduck (Mac)
This is a very easy program to use for FTP uploads. It has a simple drag and drop interface with the ability to save your favorite FTP connections.

FileZilla (PC)
This program lets you store custom FTP website settings for quick connections. Also you can setup long queues of files to download and let them go over an extended period of time.

GIMP & GimpShop (PC/Mac)
These are great programs that simulate Photoshop without all of the expense. It has many of the same features as Photoshop and lets you edit photos or create graphics.

Inkscape (PC/Mac)
This is a nice alternative to Illustrator. You can create vector graphics easily with this program, which is great for logos and illustrations.

Hope this list of free and useful programs was helpful! Let us know in the comments!
